Machine Learning for Materials Bootcamp 2023

During these boot-camps we will introduce key tools and skills for working for building machine learning models with materials science data. The boot-camps are targeted at new or potential researchers with a focus on undergraduate researchers who want to build skills related to machine learning research.

July Boot-camp: 18th, 19th, and 20th - 11am to 2pm central time via Zoom

August Boot-camp: 15th, 16th, and 17th - 11am to 2pm central time via Zoom

These three-day bootcamps are free, remote, and open to everyone, and registration is now open using the button below. Sign up today!

Boot-camp Structure

Overview:

Each introductory boot-camp is held over a period of three consecutive days, with three hour sessions held during each day. The three hours will be broken into two 1.5 hour sessions consisting of a thirty minute introductory lecture followed by an hour of hands on activities.

Between each days activities there are optional drop-in "office hour" sessions for further discussion and individual learning opportunities.

Goals:
  1. Introduce participants to common concepts and skills used in applied machine learning research

  2. Spark interest in further skill building related to machine learning

Prerequisites:
  1. Basic Python knowledge.

  2. Access to a Google account and Google Drive and the Google Colab platform (if wanting to participate fully in interactive activities).

Day 1

Working with Tabular Data

Key Ideas:
- How do we featurize data to represent materials?
- How do we assess models

Day 2

Working with Image Data

Key Ideas:
- What are common tasks we can accomplish with image models?
- What are the various deep learning model architectures we can use?

Day 3

Working with Text Data

Key Ideas:
- How can we incorporate large language models into our research workflows?

July Boot Camp Details

1 / Dates and Times

July 18, 19, 20

11:00 am to 2:00 pm CST (GMT -5:00)

2 / Meeting Links

Meeting links are shared out though the boot camp shared google drive Agenda Document.

3 / Setup for Interactive Activities

During the boot camp the majority of the time will be spent walking through interactive Python notebook code hosted through Google Colab. To fully participate attendees will need access to a google account with google drive. This is used to share the data and notebooks used in the activities. Instructions for configuring the shared drive are included in the Agenda Document.

Additionally an OpenAi account and API will needed to participate fully in the Day 3 Activities focused on utilizing large language models. With an account generated you can generate an API key on your account page.

3 / Boot Camp Materials

All of the boot camp presentation slides, data, and activities, are included in the shared google drive directory.
